A major public transit company in the Greater Montreal area sought to improve communication with its passengers by providing real-time information within bus shelters and terminals. To achieve this, the transit company required user-friendly software capable of delivering live updates, integrating with various types of equipment, and operating efficiently in outdoor environments.
A Solution Tailored to Public Transit Needs
ITEStransit, a cloud-based passenger information system, was selected to provide real-time updates to passengers. Using transit templates customized to the needs and visual identity of the transit company, ITEStransit seamlessly integrates web pages and GTFS data, enabling the real-time display of schedules, wait times, and messages.
Multi-platform software solution
ITEStransit is a multi-platform software solution that powers the display network using four distinct technologies.
Outdoor LCD Displays
These displays, powered by Windows-based media players, are connected via cellular technology using a private APN, ensuring stable and real-time communication.
Outdoor LED Displays
Featuring Android-based players and powered by solar panels and batteries, these displays offer an eco-friendly solution for bus shelters and are connected via cellular technology with a private APN.
Papercast E-Ink (E-Paper) Outdoor Displays
Solar-powered and operating with Linux, these low-energy displays provide reliable information with a minimal ecological footprint. They are also connected through cellular technology with a private APN.
Indoor LCD Displays
Installed in terminals, these LCD screens use System on Chip (SoC) technology and are connected via Ethernet. LG webOS and Samsung Smart Signage Platform (SSSP) are the two display models installed in terminals.
Centralized Control for Efficient Management
ITEStransit enables the efficient management of the transit network’s multi-platform display system. Its flexibility ensures real-time and reliable information delivery across all bus shelters and terminals.
Additionally, the role-based permission and access control module allows centralized network management while assigning specific access levels to different team members. This structured approach enhances security, streamlines operations, and ensures consistent communication.
Results: A Significant Improvement in Passenger Communication
Thanks to ITEStransit, the transit company has significantly enhanced passenger communication. The system allows centralized and efficient management of a multi-platform display network, delivering real-time, reliable, and eco-friendly information across all bus shelters and terminals. This solution not only improves the passenger experience but also aligns with the transit company’s goals of innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence.
